A regional tire distribution warehouse needed some help. They operated 16 forklifts, and the drivers needed to input inventory details into a device while they were getting in and out of the vehicle, lifting tires with two hands, and trying to balance a fragile tablet. Bar Code Direct stepped in and created a system featuring Zebra ET50 tablets and DS3608ER Scanners. They mounted the tablet directly to the forklift, allowing the operator the freedom to get in and out of the machine without worrying about dropping the tablet.

The ET50 screen was bigger, and the tablet was far more rugged than their previous device. In addition, the Pro Clip ET50 Locking Power Mounts draw their power from the forklift’s battery, meaning the operator didn’t need to constantly re-charge the device in a remote docking station, creating a time savings, and a more efficient shift.

Another benefit of the forklift mounted device is that the operator is free to use both hands to pick products when necessary.

This customized solution from Bar Code Direct saved money, time and allowed the warehouse to operate more efficiently and helped the operators do their jobs more safely.

Call us at 1.800.343.1750 and learn how BCD can help your warehouse operate more efficiently.

The Challenge: To keep up with supply chain demands and increased competition, you need more.

Warehouse workers need to fulfill more orders – faster and more accurately – than ever before. Manufacturers need to produce and ship more products, without sacrificing quality control. Technicians need to complete more error-free repairs in a day. With the rugged HD4000 Enterprise Head-Mounted Display, you can boost task efficiency and accuracy by overlaying the most relevant contextual information over your workers’ real-time field of view. Now, hands and eyes are always free to focus on tasks — instead of interacting with an application on a mobile computer to obtain the same data. Imagine how many additional 100% accurate pick orders warehouse workers can complete every day. Imagine how many more pieces of equipment technicians can repair every day. And imagine how much faster and more accurately assembly workers can build your products, increasing production without expanding your production lines or your workforce. You have just imagined the power of hands-free directed-action workflows, made possible with the HD4000.

The Solution: The HD4000 delivers everything you need in an enterprise-class mobile device accessory.

The HD4000 was developed in collaboration with Six15 Technologies, the leader in innovation in wearable optical displays. The best in class see-through display technology delivers unmatched color, contrast and image clarity. The focal distance minimizes eye fatigue. The drop-proof, dust-proof and waterproof rugged design is built to last for years, despite all-day everyday drops, bumps and spills. The accessory architecture utilizes the battery, processor and WiFi and cellular radios of the host mobile computer, enabling a feather-light 1.06 oz./30 g design that delivers extraordinary all-day comfort. Since the HD4000 mounts to commercial, off-the-shelf safety glasses without tools, you can give each worker their own personal pair of glasses, improving hygiene and helping prevent the spread of germs. The ability to switch the HD4000 from right to left eye in seconds reduces eye strain and ensures all day comfortable viewing. And workers can flip the HD4000 up and out of view in a split second, providing convenience and security.

Since there are no batteries to change, wireless radios to configure or OS updates required, management time and cost is marginal. And with Zebra’s Android HD4000 SDK and two ready-to-use tools — Zebra Warehouse Templates and Zebra Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) — integration into any existing or new application is fast and easy.

Maximize workflow efficiency, workforce productivity and the value of your mobile computers with the HD4000 from Zebra — the only see-through wearable display built for the enterprise.

It’s an MC9000 series circa 2015 used in supply chain & logistics. We weren’t surprised that this mobile computer lived up to its’ reputation – It was still working! That being said, it’s platform was ready for an update. With over 3,000,000 Zebra MC9000s sold, we want to know how many are still out in the world continuing to work hard.

Today’s mobile workers need dependable access to everything they would have in the office – communications, scanning, look-up, inventory, printing and more. And they need it all to be at hand wherever they happen to be working. That often means in hostile environments. You can’t count on consumer grade devices when your enterprise is primed for non-stop performance.

Rugged Devices vs Consumer Products

The most common objection to purchasing rugged devices is the initial cost, but Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of a rugged device versus a standard one turns out to be much less. Consumer grade electronics are simply not made to handle extreme conditions.

When subjected to day-to-day commercial use, consumer devices fail much sooner and more often. Drops, heat, moisture, vibration, dust and other common workplace issues are too much for consumer grade devices withstand. Interrupting the workflow for a day, or even an hour, while you repair, or replace a broken consumer (non-rugged) device negates initial savings.

Front of Store or Back

Even in a retail setting, rugged is a necessity, not a luxury. Retailers need to give their workers the right devices to get the job done. Rugged devices that stand up to the rigors of the mobile workplace make workers more productive and provide a smooth, seamless experience for shoppers.

Drops, Rain, Heat and Cold
How to Tell if a Device is Truly Rugged

A truly rugged device will be MIL-STD-810G tested for drops, vibration, shock and extreme temperature tolerance at a minimum. Zebra goes beyond the minimum and will test device behavior when exposed to high humidity levels, salt fog, fluid contaminants, and frequent altitude variations. And all the tests, including the drop test, are done while the device is operating, not powered off.

Ask Yourself Where and How Your Devices Are Used:

Indoor/outdoor: Are you working outside or in?

Temperature: Will the device be used in a freezer, extreme heat, or in a controlled environment?

Impact: How likely is it the device will be dropped? From what height? And onto what kind of surface?

Vibration: Car, forklift, or jack hammer? Constant exposure to vibration can damage circuits and severe connections.

Water resistance: If you use your device outdoors (even indoors), will it encounter just a few drops every now and then? Will it be operated in rainstorms? Could it be totally submerged in water?

Humidity: Again, not something we usually give much thought to. But constant high humidity may wreak havoc with sensitive circuits unless they are properly protected.

Sand and dust: If your computer will be exposed to sand and dust it better be protected against them.

True rugged computers are engineered for quality and performance first

Not only do they meet industry benchmarks in these two areas, they are the ones setting new standards. That is why you can trust Zebra’s fast, powerful, and high-quality devices to do exactly what you need them to do ( i.e. work with your software; connect in remote areas; integrate with operational technology such as peripherals, IoT, sensors, etc.) and support every workflow and worker as long as you need ( i.e. future-proof scalability, OS upgradeability, expandable storage and memory, etc ).

Zebra’s rugged built mobile computing, scanning, and printing solutions connect each operational area in your warehouse to give you and unsurpassed up-time with the agility you need to realize transformational gains.

Rugged Mobile Tablets

With Zebra’s latest acquisition of XPLORE, there’s a rugged tablet solution for the harshest demands. C1D2/C1Z2 and ATEX Compliant Tablets for Hazardous Locations (Hazloc)

Do you know if your rugged mobile PC is C1D2/C1Z2 or ATEX compliant for explosive environments?

When eliminating – not just minimizing – risk is non-negotiable in Hazardous Locations, it’s critical that you invest in either a C1D2/C1Z2 or ATEX compliant rugged tablet PC and a partner that can demonstrate the intrinsic safety of its tough mobile computer technology. Xplore offers both.

The best way to safely harness the advantages of rugged mobile computers in Hazardous Locations (Hazloc) is to employ ruggedized tablets that are either C1D2/C1Z2 compliant or ATEX compliant, depending on your regional operating standards. That’s because C1D2/C1Z2 and ATEX compliant tablets are engineered with “intrinsic safety” techniques applicable to both “live use” and rugged tablet failure situations in explosive locations.

Understanding Hazardous Location (Hazloc) Testing for Rugged Computers

There are two widely accepted intrinsic safety standards for rugged computers used in hazardous environments worldwide: C1D2 (and its newer C1Z2 counterpart) and ATEX.

CID2/C1Z2 is an ANSI/ISA North American certification for Hazardous Locations. This standard identifies three types of hazardous locations categorized by Class I (gases, vapors, and liquids), Class II (dusts), and Class III (fibers and flyings). It also identifies two divisions that indicate the level of explosive elements anticipated in each work location: Division 1 (or Zone 1) means that an explosive environment may be present during normal operating conditions. Division 2 (or Zone 2) means that explosive environment may be present only during a fault condition and for a limited time.

The ATEX Certification is based on the requirements of two European Directives – Directive 99/92/EC (also known as ATEX Workplace Directive) and Directive 94/9/EC (the ATEX Equipment Directive). Derived from the French title of the latter – Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères EXplosives – ATEX directives describe what equipment and work environment is allowed in explosive environments.

Both C1D2 and ATEX standards are commonly recognized in most regions of the world, and both offer comparable levels of rugged mobile work protection in Hazardous Locations.

L10 Platform
